is a good possibility that 1 of the spark plugs isnt firing. easiest way to check is to see if it starts on only 1 cylinder....the 1 that isnt firing is the trouble spot. could be a bad plug wire or a bad coil for that wire. i have a feeling this is what the problem is. the bike is still sucking in gas to that cylinder, but there's no spark to set off the mix...and eventually gets the plug too wet to fire it on compression alone.
ash grey color on the plugs is just a tad lean, but not so lean that it will cause the bike to run extremely hot. the 'holy grail' color is a light tan.

thr carb that supports the side of the wet plug, has it's float sticking. It has to be rebuilt. But if the bike is still under warentee, take it in and let the dealer ship deal with it.

Like guardrail jim says, that bike will never run like new unless it's rebuilt. You may get it to run reasonably, IF you balance your flows. You MUST synchronize those carburators! Poking it with a screwdriver is NOT good enough.
You never told me what manual you were using.
My '74 CL360 never saw full throttle.
It would cruise the highway at 70+, carrying over 200 lbs.

One cylinder is worn out more than the other. Piston, rings, cylinder, valve guides, valve guide seals. Like I keep telling you, a simple adjustment isn't going to magically make your bike run like new.
The plug smells of fuel because the worn cylinder isn't strong enough to fully ignite it.

you have 1 carb per cylinder so which ever cylinder is fouled is the side you need to work on. but you need to check for bad carb boots since you are dealing with a old bike. and possibly carbs need cleaned depending on when they were cleaned last.

could also be a spark box isn't working right. Especially if it doesn't run well. Anything that invloves the ignition for that cylinder could be the culprit, like bad plug wire, coil, etc.

No you need to BALANCE the carbs. this makes the air volume in each the same and helps performance a ton!
