I don't recommend the actual city itself.
There is no public transportation in the city.
There are no good hotels in the city itself but in the suburbs they are much better.
I recommend the Airzoo in Kalamazoo, MI,
the space museum in Jackson Mi
and Michigan adventures theme park in Muskgeon.
The DIA is under a major remodel so I don't advise going there.most of the exhibits are in storage or cram into one gallery .

Detroit is like many other urban cities when big companies leave and take their jobs with them. Southeastern Michigan - not just Detroit has the highest unemployment rate in the nation mainly because all the manufacturing jobs have gone overseas. I have lived here all my life and never been a victim of crime. I wouldn't say one area is worst than the other - there are some neighborhoods that are less safe than others though. You wouldnt walk down the street at night alone on a street full of abandoned buildings and desolate. Trust your gut instincts. Most of the crime you read and see on the news are people that know each other or have made enemies. Some nicer neighborhoods are downtown, Sherwood Forest, Rosedale Park, and Victoria Park. There are cool casinos, museums, parks, marinas, restaurants, and night life near downtown Detroit. Detroit has a nice cultural center near Wayne State University right in the heart of Detroit. The city has decayed because housing prices fell. Home owners are just abandoning their homes and moving out of state for jobs. Hope this helps some.

There are many different sites that one should take in in a visit to Detroit, MI. Since you will be around in the summer you definitely have to take in a Tiger's game at Comerica Park. It is in this area that you could spend a couple days hitting the numerous bars and restaurants. A major point of interest is Greek Town which is a few blocks lined with old style Greek stores and restaurants. In this area there are also the Greek Town Casino where you could test your luck. During the summer months there are countless festivals that are going on all of the time, many of which take place along the river in Renaissance park. From the park and the River walk you can see Windsor, Canada and it's infinite points of fun.
These are just some of the stops that one has to make when in downtown Detroit. There are countless suburbs that each have their own fun things to do and sights to see.
I hope you enjoy yourself.

First of all, Detroit isn't very safe, I hear once a week minium (Usually like three times a week) of someone getting killed in Detroit. So I wouldn't spend the night. But there is the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) I've been there on a school field trip and there is some nice art there! Also there is the Joe Louis Arena (Home of the Detroit Red Wings) so you could go see some games there. And further more there is also the Greek Town Casino's, Rennasance Center, and Cobo Hall.
When it comes to the Hotel there is the Royal Park Hotel in the Rochester Hills. This hotel is so great that even the current president stayed there for one night! If you don't believe me then go call them up!

If you are going in the summer time, you have to go to Comerica Park for a baseball game...however, you may want to get your tickets ahead of time since the fans have been coming out of the woodwork after last year's season. I live an hour south, so I don't stay there when I go, nor do I use public transportation (actually I'm rather adverse to public transportation period). I go mostly for the sports - especially baseball and hockey (or if my Bears are playing at Ford Field). I also go to MGM Grand casino (there are others there). There are several concert venues I have been to around the city. But beyond concerts and sports (and one play at the Fisher Theatre) hmm...not sure what else. I've heard the Detroit Zoo is good. The International Auto Show just ended so that's out. In Dearborn, right outside of Detroit, there's the Henry Ford Museum (I think that was a mandatory trip when we are kids. Since you are going in the summer time, you may want to consider taking a 2-hour drive to get to Sandusky, OH to visit Cedar Point (greatest amusement park ever).

See the RENCEN. There are summer music festivals every weekend, featuring different cultures and a Hoedown for country music lovers. Visit Mexicantown.. LOTS OF great authentic Mexican cuisine.. only about 10 minutes west of downtown Detroit (Evie's Tamales, Mi Pueblo, Armando's, Mexicantown Restaurant.. many, many others). Mexican pastries... Luna's Bakery On W. Vernor), Mexicantown Bakery(On W.Vernor), La Gloria Bakery (On Bagley). We have Comerica Park downtown for baseball, Hockeytown Cafe right across the street from Comerica Park. There are 3 different casinos if you like to gamble. Also, across the bridge or thru the tunnel into Canada into Windsor, there is Casino Windsor. Greektown in Downtown Detroit has shopping eateries, bakeries, etc. The nightlife in downtown Detroit, on the weekends, sometimes is worth the trip!

Put the Motown Museum on the top of your list. The Gordy family really know how to do it right. Everyone gets a guided tour and the guides are fantastic. It is on the boulevard. Eat at the Roma Cafe and Union Street. Go bowling at the Majestic. If a game is in town go early and eat Nemos on Michigan Ave and take their shuttle. check out a play at the Gem. The historical museum and the DIA are right accross the street from each other and there are old homes that are hotels right there. Drive out I-94 and see the biggest tire in the world. Go to the Henry Ford in Dearborn and do the Village as well. After a night out stop once at Lafayette Coney Island, order at least 2 coneys and a cheese fries. They never write anythng down so see if you can stump them.

Everyone has a lot of good ideas
Frankenmouth is fun along with Canterbury Village, Huckleberry Railroad, Great Wolf Lodge and Mackinaw Island
It really depends on what you like to do and how far you are wanting to drive while you are in the area
Hope you enjoy your trip
