On our house extension which is our dining room we have recurring black mould appearing in the plaster and the emulsion painted wallpaper. There used to be a small patch in the top corner which seems to be getting worse and it now appears all the way down along the door frame. I had hoped that the installation of cavity wall insulation would have reduced possible condensation by keeping the inner wall warmer but it appears to have gotten worse. Any advice that will cure the problem will be appreciated.

the black mold ( stackybotrys ) is toxic but otherwise it is the same as any other mold. it requires the correct temp/humid. if you eliminate the reoccurring moisture the mold will die. more that likely you have a leak someplace, either rain or a leaky pipe or condensation that somehow finds its way to the door frame. after you correct the situation use a disinfectant on the interior surfaces. you cannot treat this problem superficially, it must be attacked at the root cause.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no cure for black mold. You're going to have to put a mask on, and replace the area. Black mold will emit spores into the air, that can cause a variety of breathing problems and sicknesses. In the very young, the very old, and someone with a compromised immune system it can get dangerous because their immune systems are either not developed or weakened. You problem will only continue to get worse, and you'll have to replace more unless you start now. This is the reason why so many homes are condemned in the 9th Ward in New Orleans......compliments of Hurricane Katrina. I wish you the best of luck.

if you have soil against the outer wall. Above the Damp Proof Membrane , this needs to be removed. Check the seals of your door and workout how tight the frame is in the door way. any gaps may let in dampness. The soils need to be below the Damp proof membrane as the brick work should be a better engineering brick under the dpm. Above the dpm, the brick is more decorated on its outer face, probably, more porous too. Soil would act like a spong in the wet, against the brick work.

open up the wallboard and find the air leak... install vapour barrier and insulation... replace the board.
Don't mess with being cheap with mould. Kill it before it kills you.
