The U.S. first assistance in Vietnam was as early as World War II when OSI agents assisted Ho Chi Minh and his Viet Minh resistance forces in fighting a guerilla war against the Japanese and Vichy French occupying forces. The U.S. supported the Viet Minh with advisors and equipment.

After WWII, The U.S. supported France and then South Vietnam during the first two Indochina Wars. The second Indochina War is better known as the Vietnam War in the U.S.
