As the moon moves closer the tides grow exponentially in magnitude. After 3 days everyone not living on mountains had been killed by the waves. After 5 days even the mountain dwellers are slain too. By day 6 only a few thousand people are left - mostly in the centre of large continents such as the middle of Russia, Mongolia and the Australian deserts.
Day 7 BANG!
Day 8 As the moon's impact shakes the world volcanoes and earthquakes kill off a lot of the remaining life on the world.
Day 9 The dust from the moon hitting has caused the atmosphere to become so cloudy that sunlight is not getting through - the ice age has begun.
1000 years time - life goes on in the new ice age, a few new species are here, a lot of old ones are wiped out by now (possibly including humans?)
1200 years time - the Octopods climb out of their oceanic cocoons and rule the world as they did in the age of the dinosaurs, (they hid in giant cocoon cities under the sea while humans were about but now their time has come again).
2560 years time - the Octopods build spaceships and colonise Mars.

And that is what would happen.

Several larger asteroid impacts could potentially move the moon very slightly in it's orbit, although there are no objects large enough to move the moon so far out of it's current path that it would crash into the earth in anything less than several hundred million years. The moon is currently moving away at a rate of just under 4cm every year (1.5in), the very most an asteroid could possibly do would be to reduce that rate by the smallest margin. Also, if the moon did collide with the earth, the earth would bend and flex towards the moon, land would probably split and crack, the tides would go out of control, things would go crazy, but no, the world would not resemble the avatar world in any way - the moon doesn't produce enough gravity to counteract the gravity of the earth. The moon also has relatively minimal magnetic presence, so it wouldn't affect the earth's magnetic field. Changes in gravity would affect tidal activity and air density, which would in turn have massive impacts on the weather, but the magnetic field would remain intact. Basically - world is cracking and splitting on the surface, the tide is rising and falling a huge amount (as in, hundreds of meters). Nothing is flying or floating as the moon's gravity is not sufficient to overcome the earth's, but the weather is DIFFERENT because of a change in climate (not necessarily firestorms, just things like snow in a desert).

While I understand your proposition, the Moon is actually moving away from the Earth about four inches every year. See

for a very interesting story about what will happen in about 4 billion years as the Moon gets farther and farther away from the Earth.

If the Moon were to come closer to the Earth, you could wager on some realy big waves for the surfers. Tides would increase in a dramatic fashion. Once it started moving in towards Earth, there would be no force on Earth powerful enough to stop it.

The moon will be broken down to small chunks when it reaches the Roche limit, about one earth radius and a half away.
Some rocks would be flung out to space, some would spiral down and fall on earth. Larger boulders would impact earth with the same energy that the meteor that terminated the dinosaurs had. Everyone dies.
And no one would be left to figure out what pushed the moon out of its current slowly *diverging* orbit (the moon is moving away from earth, due to tidal effect).

The moon will break before it hits the earth and pieces will
circle the earth like rings of saturn...
These pieces will slowly begin to fall to earth, smaller pieces first.
If the pieces fell out of orbit over a long enough time period, it would
not wipe out mankind...

We send Bruce Willis with a nuke to plant in the core of the moon and he saves us on day 6 at 23 hrs 59 mins and 59 secs.

before the collision gravity effects will cause chaotic tides and earthquakes. not that there will be anything alive on the planet to watch.

except maybe scientist in orbit

Do you not remember, they send a guy up there with a bomb. He plants it and detonates it and the moon is knocked into another orbit. EARTH saved.

Gravity rips the soil from the earth and moon and both break up.
