You need a four year degree and then about sixty five masters credits. How long it takes you to complete the masters credits depends on how many courses you can take a semester and when the courses are offered. At the school I'm at now, the counseling program generally takes three to four years. It only offers night classes. If you are working, two classes a semester is a substantial work load. The classes require much more than undergrad. For example my one class last spring is somewhat at the intro level and I handed in about twenty pages a weeks plus three 15-20 page papers. After you complete the courses there is a two year period in which you work in the field under a supervisor. So in the end that's about five-six years until you are working independently. That's the state requirement. Some schools like Montclair State and Rutgers offer full time so you may be able to take the courses in two years. If you are working though, that might not be the route you want to take. If you get awesome grades you can get accepted directly out of college and possibly just continue on full time, but many colleges like to see work experience as well as good grades.

I'm finishing up my BA in psychology this semester. It's 4 years for a BA. Two or three more for a Masters. And two or three more for a Ph.D. Then a post doctorate if you choose.

Bachelor's takes 4 years which may suffice to work for a government agency.

A Master's is hightly recommended, which takes about two more years.
