that she would find her gravitating to people much younger than her, perhaps to alleviate the emptiness of never being a mother?

Feasible? Sure. Inevitable? No.

This maternal instinct is grossly exaggerated in the human female. There are may women who did not and do not want children, along with many who SHOULD not have children, because they are emotionally or temperamentally unfit.

My theory: The parental instinct depends a lot on pressures from the social environment as well as the type of familiy life one had growing up. If you grew up in a happy, nurturing family, you are much more likely to be a good parent (just my theory)

Not necessarily......
We're all different , and not every woman feels "empty" because she's never had children.
Some women might.... but then again, some women might not.

We're all individuals and each of us would react differently. I raised not only my own children, but fostered kids for almost 30 years. I still do it because I feel that I'm making a difference, not because I feel any sense of emptiness.

I have close friends, from the age of 23 to 68 - and each one offers something different to my life. But if I were to concentrate on only the younger end of the spectrum, I would miss out on much that I get from my older friends - and visa versa

I'm middle aged attractive and not married. I went to college and have a good job. I have had relationships but never felt the need to marry. I don't especially like children. I have two dogs and live in my own house. No one pitys me that I know of. In fact, some people have said they envy me my life. Half my friends are divorced anyway and some are in unhappy marriages. No one will pity you if you decide to stay single; that's for the past. These days lots of women chose to stay single and some are celibate and are not interested in men or relationships. They aren't gay, just interested in another way of life. Best of luck to you. You are perfectly normal.

there are as many reasons as there is people. some medical, some from childhood scars of torture and all types of unspeakable reasons.....some just because they never fell in love. Empty, no. Not having kids raises you I.Q. by as much as fifty points. There are plenty of children, all with no one to raise them. To place getting an education in front of bodily functions is the biggest plus thinkable. Cleaning up your neighborhood is right up there too. getting involved in a good cause is good too. So much more to look at!...good luck...

Or because these are the people she has the most in common with - no children, single, free, no one to answer to or discuss plans with because they are her plans not "ours", etc. Not sure I buy the emptiness theory - maybe for some only. Really, what has age got to do with it? Don't we tend to belong to groups of people who share our values, etc? Would you ask the same question of a man - I think not.

I think that's a reasonable assumption, though not always the case.
