I have a desktop and laptop computer at home. The laptop already has built in wireless capabilities. I want the desktop to go wireless. Is was reading on PCI wireless cards and USB wireless adapters. I really don't want to open the tower to put in the PCI wireless card. My question is, can my desktop go wireless, or do I have to have the router hard wired to the desktop. So can I have my router connected to the cable modem only, and the other two wireless? I need help!

I have the same set-up here at home. I have the wireless router wired into the DSL/Cable modem and then the desktop wired into the wireless router. The laptop is wireless. Then I installed the software I got with the wireless router onto the desktop (that is wired into the wireless router).

Basically it looks like this...

Desktop attached to the wireless router... Wireless router attached to the DSL/Cable modem and the laptop floating free.

Yes you can have the 2 pcs connected wirelessly and the modem plugged into the router by ethernet alone. It means youa rent restricted to where your laptop and pc sit in your home and the router can be in a permanent position.

Instead of buying a PCI card you can get a wireless USB hub to connect to the pc to save you opening the case of the pc.

You will however need to have an extra ethernet cable attached to you router to access your routers setup in case of problems but this can easily be attached to your laptop then removed after the changes are made.

There's no reason to fear opening up the case... and any one who can use a screwdriver has the essential skills necessary to put in a PCI card.

There are many USB WiFi adapters out there so if you fear tinkering around with the internals of your PC, then perhaps the USB WiFi adapters are your best bet. In my experience they have been slightly slower and weaker than a PCI WiFi card, so if your PC is close to your WiFi router, then you should be OK, if not, then I would consider opening up the tower and overcoming your fear.

The PCI card can only fit in one way, so you can't really screw that up.
