Recent theory has consciousness distributed and not the function a one area. The " I " of consciousness is actually many " I's " that are functionally integrated.

It's best thought of as an emergent phenomenon with all the different neural connections working together. Neurobiology will one day give us better answers but it might not find the 'conscious centre' of the brain if there is no such thing.
