change the battery in the remote. Take it to the dealer where you got it and they will have the appropriate battery and be able to help you out.

If it is the remote-control not working, it may be as simple as replacing the battery. Just use a screw-driver to pry apart the plastic part where the metal loop is for the key chain. Make sure to get the correct-type battery or it won't work. Should be all it takes.
Also, depending on the type of car this is, you can find additional info in the owner's manual, look under key-less entry in the index.

If it is the keyless entry remote then you need to take it to a dealer. They have a programing machine that they can match up remote to your car.
Depending on what company makes your car will dictate how much they charge to reprogram it. Usually, it is about $40. They might just have to replace your battery too.

Well to start your car, your key (or fob) has a small chip inside it called a transponder which verifies a unique scrambled code between the car and the key. If they do not match, or if the transponder is missing - you cannot start the car.
It may be very pricey to get your manufacturer to program a new one - I know someone who had it done and it cost them £150.
The above doesnt apply to access the car so I would think that it would be the key battery.

First thing I'd do is use the key and stick it in the key hole and unlock the door manually. Then I'd get to a place that sells replacement batteries for the key fob and you should be all set.
I saw your addition...if your car doesn't start then you need to have a mechanic look at it, it could be anything.

Use the key to open the door. It is the old-fashioned way, but it still works!
