In Canada, as long as one party is aware and consents to the taping then it is perfectly legal.
If a third party was taping you without either ones knowledge then it would be illegal.
If the police tape you and another person, they must have a court order first.

It's not illegal for the authorities to tape audio without the people knowing under some circumstances (ex. All 911 calls are recorded) or if they have a warrant. As I recall the patriot act expands the circumstances under which a conversation can be monitored and recorded without the knowledge of the speakers.

It is also not illegal to record a conversation that happens in public domain (outside your home) even without a warrant, as (according to the Supreme Court) you do not have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in public areas.

This is essentially true no matter what state you're in.

Also this act only applies to government officials (cops, and so on) and does NOT protect you from private individuals, bounty hunters, or business shows (such as candid camera). So your friends can make a recording of a conversation you have and (because it was recorded by private citizens) it is even admissible as evidence against you in a court or hearing.

Or at least that's what I remember from my constitutional law courses, I can look up specific cases if you need.

It's not illegal to tape somebody against thier knowledge and as for the privacy act if u are taping somebody in a public place then they could not be expected to have privacy but on the other hand if it is in thier house or car then it would not be admissible in court since they don't expect people to be listening.

If you are a party to the conversation, you can make a tape even without telling the other party, though it would probably be considered impolite to do so. You cannot, however, tape a conversation where you are not a party unless you have permission.

In most cases if one party to the conversation knows it's being taped it is not illegal

In most states yes. There are some where only one party of the conversation has to know.

I believe it is legal if one person is aware of it, however you would not be able to use it against someone in court.
