If it's cakey in certain spots or if you have an obvious "line" around your chin that looks like you're wearing a mask or if your face color looks drastically different than the color of your neck....
Blend, blend, blend, and choose the right color! It's best to try colors on outside in natural light....just swipe a few samples on to your face and go outside and look at it before you buy, or get a professional to match a color for you for free at a dept. store. My guess is that they will be happy to do this if it means you'll buy the product!

Basically, you know that you have applied your foundation unevenly if there are obvious color and undertone variances on your face. Also if you are prone to any feature which you wish to cover as in redness, brown spots, age spotes, acne , dry places, a shiny T-zone... on your face and one area has it and the rest does not, you know you have applied it unevenly. The easiest way, I think, to apply any type of foundation: liquid, powder, creme to powder etc. is to use something known in the make-up world as the five-dot method place a medium-sized dotlike amount of foundation on the forhead, each of the cheeks, the nose, and lastly the chin. Then spread and blend the rest of the product to the rest of your face. Next blend carefully down into the neck area and to the sides towards your ears for an even finish and skintone. Also you can buy a foundation primer to make sure your foundation and all other face make-up: concealer, tinted moisturizer, powder, blush, highlighter, and bronzer stays fresh and lasts all day.

Basically, it won't look right. But it's not necessarily the matter of being uneven that's the problem but it's the matter of not completely blending it in (sort of links to your question) where you will end up with streaks. If you have streaks, IT'S WRONG.

you should be able to look and tell..alot of people get confused when it comes to foundation, sometimes the color is toooooo dark and people mistake that for being uneven
