I think part of the reason might be because men really do love us women more than they will admit to ;)

Perhaps because many men would be hesitant to refer to revving HIS engine or saying 'isn't HE a beaut?'. Could also have ties back to the days of the ancients where it was common to pray to houses of both male and female deities, but how many guys are going to openly admit they need help from another guy?
