I have two questions....My husband and I just started trying to conceive a baby this month, my last period was on Jan. 8th (my periods last 7 days and there is usually at least 30, if not 32 days in between each period). {A} I've heard that ovulation occurs about 14 days after the first day of your last period, right? Well, after the egg releases from the ovary, it takes a few days to make its way down the fallopian tube (which, for example, is only lets say 18 days from the first day of my last period) so after it makes its way through the fallopian tube does it just hang out in your uterus until the rest of the (32) days pass when your supposed to get your period? or do i have that all wrong? (im confusing myself haha) and also,{B} from the day the egg is released from the ovary and the egg is in the fallopian tube, are you most fertile to get pregnant any time from then until the day you get your period? If someone could clear this up for me id appreciate it. Thank you!

Ovulation dates need to be determined by charting your fertility cycles. With charting you can determine when you are most apt to ovulate (which is always counted from the end of the length of your shortest cycle). The part is called the luteal phase and it is the most consistent part of your cycle.

With charting you will learn to recognize all the signs of fertility. You monitor your resting temperature every morning to determine when you have ovulated. You also monitor your cervical fluids (for 'egg-white' mucus) and your cervical position (to be high, open and soft), These last two tell you when you are most apt to ovulate.

You are actually only fertile for about 3 days (can be up to 6, if everything is amazingly in sync). Basically the two days before you ovulate (because sperm can live in the uterus for up to 72 hours) and the day after you ovulate. After that you are back to being infertile. The best thing to do to determine when these times are is to chart your cycles. If you would like to learn more about that, go to my link below and contact me.

Wow, I don't even know where to start. First of all, you should read a book called "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It will really help you understand what your body does before you can conceive.

Ovulation is not decided based on the first day of your last period. For everyone, this is different. The lutheral plase (from ovulation until your next period) is what stays consistent. Usually 12-16 days depending on the person.

When you want to calculate the day of your cycle, the first day of your period is cycle day one and it continues this way until the first day of your next period. So if you are on cycle day 33 and start your period again, this would be day 1 and your last cycle would have been 32 days.

When your body prepares to ovulate, you have several hormones that need to increase/decrease to make your body ovulate. These hormones include FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), estrogen, LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and progesterone.

The FSH matures the eggs in the the ovaries. Each egg is in its own follicle and the follicles produce estrogen (which is necessary to ovulate). One of the eggs will become larger than the others. The estrogen that is produced will cause the LH to surge which causes the egg to go through the ovatian wall and release (ovulation). Once the egg is released, the other follicles will disintegrate.
The egg is then picked up by the fallopian tubes. The follicle that the egg came out of is now called the corpus luteum and produces progesterone for approximately 14 days. If you conceive during this time, it will continue to produce progesterone. If you do not conceive, it will disintegrate and your progesterone levels will drop. This will cause you to start your next period.

Back to the egg. Once the egg is in the fallopian tube, it will only live for a few hours (I believe it is up to 24 hours later) after this time, it is not possible to conceive until your next cycle.

Ideally, you want to have BEFORE you ovulate since sperm can live inside your body for up to 5 days. If you time things correctly, the sperm will be waiting for the egg and will penetrate the egg. Once the egg is penetrated, it must attach itself to the lining of your uterus for you to conceive.

The best way to check to see when you are ovulating, is to check 2 things. First is your basal body temperature. You can do this with a basal thermometer (it's more accurate than a regular one). When you ovulate and produce more progesterone, your body temperature will elevate a little. By checking your temperature, you can tell if you ovulated.

The second thing you should check is your cervical fluid. Every month, your body will produce a fluid to help the sperm swim up your cervix into your uterus. Your body will produce this just before you ovulate. You are looking for a stretchy "egg white" type fluid to know you are about to ovulate.

There are a lot of baby sites that can help you with this. Also, if you are going to chart your temperature/fluid. I suggest going to www.fertilityfriend.com. There is a free version that you can use to keep track of all the information that will help you and there is also a 10 lesson program you can read up on to learn more about how your cycles work.

Wishing you the best of luck with your TTC journey!

In your case you would ovulate somewhere around day 16 or 17 of your cycle. A person that has a 28 day cycle would ovulate around day 14. but in your case your cycle is 30 to 32 days so you would ovulate on day 16 or 17 maybe even day 18. So you are fertile for 3 to 4 days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation. Sperm can stay alive for up to 5 days in fertile cervical mucus so the prime time to have sex is two days before you ovulate inorder for the sperm to reach the egg in time. So you would want to be having sex around days 14 and 15 of your cycle but it also wont hurt to have sex any of the other times too. You can become pregnant when having sex on any of your fertile days. After you ovulate your egg is only able to be fertilized within 12 to 24 hours so timing is everything!!! Go to mymonthlycycles.com to find out when you ovulate. best of luck to you!!!
