It could be that your old sim is a PAYG sim which would make it incompatible with a contract phone. Alternatively, it could be that your old sim that you are using has not been used for a while and has been closed by the network. All networks do this with an inactive sim, they close them, unless they are used fairly regularly.
Is the phone new, or 2nd hand? If it's new, return it to where you bought it from. If it's 2nd hand, the person you purchased it from may have stolen it, or come by it through dishonest means, e.g. they may have bought it from a thief.
I think you need to do some more research, using the methods I have suggested.
Hope this helps.

You will probably need to register the simcard, although with O2 you shouldnt have to. You should be able to pop in your simcard and it will work. Its possible that the phone is blocked although it seems highly unlikely, depends of course where you got the phone from.

My phone says that when I've locked the keys and try to press any buttons. Like-wsie if you have no credit, your signal is low or you have yet to register it. Have a look in the manual or call your free phone top up number, the network should be able to help you. Good luck

Did the sim card come with the phone or is it an old sim card you are putting in to a new phone?

has i got the sim card in it?
if it has i might need a clean to get a better connection, or it might not be compatible with the phone.
They are sometimes locked to a particular network so will need unlocking by a (non franchise) phone shop to work with another network

well basically, your mobile phone has no reception and therefore cannot conect to the network. what you have to do is, turn your mobile phone off, take off the cover and remove the battery. once taken out then put it back in, and turn it back on.

It would need to be registered. If you have done that then ring the network. You are not getting network coverage if it says emergency calls only.
