The restitution will go a long way in considering the sentence.
If it's his first offence, I can almost guarantee probation.

Many factors come into play. Have the stores filed a complaint with the police requesting an arrest? If not restitution plus fees is a possibility. Most stores don't want an arrest they want their money fast.An arrest would mean a long wait for their money. If the police are involved this is a problem that has been around for awhile. Most places will send certified letters requesting payment prior to going to the police

If the store will go along with it you could probably do that, but I would highly advise you just let your friend pay the consequences on his actions. My aunt did that a few years ago and someone paid her way out of it . Next thing you know she did it again and was paid out again. About 2 years ago she got so used to everyone paying her way out that she went and wrote about 20,000 dollars worth of checks and of course no one could afford to help anymore. She spent about 1 year in one jail and is now in another one (cause wrote checks in multiple counties) and is expecting to have to spend at least 2 years in that jail. When she gets out of that jail she still has to face charges in another county. I truly believe if no one would have helped her on that first bad check she would have learned her lesson and would not be the mess she's in now. So please let your friend take care of this problem his self. Just my opinion.

Writing a "bad check" will not make you go to jail. It's illegal to write a check if you don't intend to cover the funds, but a bounced check doesn't mean you intended to commit a crime. It's the intention that makes it a crime, and it's impossible to prove unless he does it many times in a short period, and confesses that it was deliberate. The worst that will happen is he will go on checksystem and will be unable to have any kind of bank account for about 6 years.

He would have to pay for the bad checks, any check charges the stores inccured and maybe attorney fees and court costs. What he did is a felony! Best he come forward and take care of it, instead of waiting for them to catch up with him! He could avoid jail time by taking care of it. It's not going away on it's own, he may have warrants out for his arrest!

they will take him to jail regardless. However - he may get out of the felony. He may only go for the night and then get a misdemeanor.

You bet. He committed a crime and he will pay for it. Perhaps the judge will be one of those liberal types who will give your friend a reprimand and let him go free.

It depends on if the stores want to press charges. If it is intentional than yes, he can.
