Okay, so here is the situation with my car. I have a 1999 Ford Taurus. It's been a great car and very little maintenance has been required beyond the normal checkups. But, lately, and specifically as of the wintry weather has started up, my car makes a sound.... Well, let me try to explain this way. When I first start the car for the day, I turn on the ignition and the car idles during the start. While it idles, it makes a loud noise. Then, I shift it into R gear (it's an automatic) and it makes a noise during the idle part of the shift. So, anytime, at least this is when I notice it, it idles during a shift or accelerating the car, etc. it makes a noise while it tries to shift into gear. It's sort of like the noise your break pads make when they need to be changed. I have no idea what this is. Some have said my idle part may need to be replaced. But I have no idea and dread taking it to the dealer because they always find a dozen problems and jack the cost up.

No one is going to be able to tell you exactly what's wrong or even how to fix it without seeing it first hand. Take it easy on the road, save up some money & talk to a specialist!

I would say it's the serpentine belt, probably needs replaced, leave your car idling and take a glass of water and pour it over the belt and if the noise goes away you have found the problem.

Agreed with Bryan's wife, and as far as the dealer jacking up the price that is bull, I work for a dealer as a technician. As a tech we are trained to look for possible problems to make the customer aware of, they are no obligation to buy anything. It is just a suggestion. If they do choose to pay for a service we have recommended, and have a related problem to any service we perform we stand behind our services as that is our responsibility!!!!!
