As of right now, I would say the Core Duo x6800-Quad core may be the wave of the future, but as of today, very few application developers write code that will take advantage of 2 cores, much less 4 cores. While it is true that applications natively will (mostly) not take advantage of dual core, you can assign affinity for a program(s) to a certain core, leaving the other to run your most processor intensive apps, such as photo/video editing or intense gaming. In essence, you can assign your more mundane tasks, such as anti-virus, anti spyware and such to the second processor, leaving processor 1 free to do the more intensive tasks that all of the mundane stuff would slow down.

Neither. They are quite overpriced for very little improvement (unless you happen to be running programs than can handle multiple cpus). For gaming, completely overpriced uselesss things. And since their price will be (is) dropping, no need to get it now. Goto www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks. That will give you an idea of performance, and if it's really worth it for you.
