i think it came from an indian fella cant remember the name but when he fell in he shouted ive gota think quick here hens the name quick sand

because 'quick' may also mean alive in a diverse context, it become used to intend stay a lot extra in Older English. So quicksand = stay sand, because the sand swallows human beings up, it type of feels to be stay... that is the way it receives the call. =D

maybe because when you fall in there you struggle which causes you to sink quicker and when you don't you sink slower
