As a garage door contractor, I can tell you no, it won't hurt the door at all. Most machines are made to stop wherever you want them to. If it's an older machine, what might happen is when you close the door from the "one foot off the ground" position, it may reverse upon hitting the ground, and go all the way up. Just hit the button again, and it will close.

I don't think you wil damage it, but I can see the advantages both ways. Fixer upper has a good idea to allow air-flow and maintain security. It is a bad idea to drive a car straight into the garage and shut the door as the lack of air circulation will promote corrosion in the exhaust pipe/silencer. If the system is hot when garaged then condensation can form inside the pipe, which hastens deterioration of the system. Much better to let it cool down in the fresh air and/or allow adequate ventilation around it.

I've lived in my house for 7 years, we have a two car garage, with two auto door openers...they haven't gone out yet with all the opening and closing and opening and closing, etc...however, 7 years, door stays closed unless we go out, in which case we open it, and then hit the button to close it again..we've never left it open for air to circulate, and the air seems to be fine, however...he's wrong in the fact that it will damage the door, it won't, so whatever floats your boat.
P.S. the guy who said he can fit through a 12 inch area.....is right, there are plenty of small burglars, which leaves them able to get into the garage and possibly into the house, not to mention all kinds of little creatures....bugs, rats, mice, squirrels, cats....
Don't think I need to go on :)

As said by many experts before me; no, you won't hurt the door. No problem. YOU like the ventilation and HE likes it closed. Do you have a 'man door' to the garage? If you do, cut 2 - 9X12 holes... one up high and one down low, on the door. Install a couple of vents on each side of the door and bingo! You get the airflow and he gets the clean look from the street.
If you don't have a man door, find two spots down low on the garage door and do the same idea...

I can easily fit through a 12" gap, and once inside it would not be difficult to open the door the rest of the way and remove all the stuff in the garage. From a theft perspective you are better off leaving the door closed all the way.

You win! It will do no harm whatsoever to open your garage door to any extent that you wish.
Some older door systems don't allow this, but it wasn't to protect the system, it was because the control systems just weren't designed for it, just as there were no safety systems like load detectors and electric eyes to detect if anything or anybody was in the way of the door.
You won't harm anything in any way. I service and install these all the time.

I have done that for years and never had a problem. As a matter of fact my parents did that as long as I can remember and I don't recall them ever having problems.
