Although apples and oranges have been compared as opposites in a very common idiomatic expression, the fruits have many common attributes.

p.s. common's use in the sentence may seem repetitive, but it could be used to accentuate how they are similar. Change common to something that means the same if you want.

What exactly are you writing about the two fruits? That is what we would need to know to help with the topic sentence.
