The USSR - the Soviet Union - collapsed.
On December 8, 1991, the leaders of the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian republics met in Belavezhskaya Pushcha to issue a declaration that the Soviet Union was dissolved and replaced by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The Balkan war started (Yugoslavian Civil War, 1991-1995), when Slovenia and Croatia proclaimed independence from Yugoslavia. OK, of course the war was not an awsome thing, but awful - just saw that it was awsome things you were looking for. But it was definitely a big political event with huge impact on European history.
