I have just started knitting something other than the scarf and am trying to use a pattern but am not sure what a yrn is. One said yarn round needle and another said it is the same a yarn over. Are they the same or is it different somehow?

Yarn around needle. Here's a link with the list of knitting abbreviations. http://knitting.about.com/od/learntoknit/l/bl_abbreviations.htm

It stands for yarn 'round needles, or the same as yarn over. You can look up the Abbreviations and description of knitting at http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/abbreviations_explained/. This site has been very helpful to me as I wanted to learn how to make new things in knitting.

I've never heard that term before.
But just so you know I think the other people are right and that you should know that it is also sometimes called a yarn forward.
I would personally abbreviate wyan for wrap yarn around needle
for some reason it makes more sense to me than yrn.
