I am mainly looking for social and cultural indicators, but feel free to discuss transport, military, employment, food, globalisation etc if you feel like it.

Hint for anyone whose main goal here is to get a valuable and heart warming two points: This should take more than two lines!

Thanks everyone.

To get rid of politics would be one way to show true enlightenment. All politics do is tear apart a culture or a country. Everyone feels they must be on one side or the other and thus nothing of importance ever gets done. To show that we are all on the same page and have a goal for the society would be enlightenment.

Obviously there are other things as well, racism being probably the second biggest issue here. When the people hate each other for no other reason than because one is of a different skin tone, that shows ignorance and a lack of understanding.

Crime is something that would have to be nearly completely wiped out in order for one to call their society "enlightened." How enlightened can one be when he is willing to shoot his neighbor for his shoes or coat? In a society of decency and intelligence, this would not fly.

The problem with wanting an enlightened society is that it goes against almost everything that is human nature. We are an agressive species who will always want what our neighbor has. We are envious, we are jugdmental, and we are in many cases stupid. We do not see that the other man has something and if I work as hard as he did, with some breaks along the way, I too could have that. No we see it and want it now, and commit crimes against our fellow man to make it so. This is no show of enlightenment.

Unfotunately for humans, the grass is always greener and we always want what our neighbor has. I believe a truely enlightened society to be a distant dream and one of unattainable reach.

I kind of look at it like deep space travel. Boy what a great thing it would be if we had the technology to get there, but we don't, at least not yet. I say we keep working on it and who knows, if we lay good enough foundations now, maybe 10-15 generations down the road we can make it to the Andromeda Galaxy. Thanks and have a nice day.

Frankly, the best sign would be no sign, because such a culture would want to avoid ours at all costs and want to make sure we did not know of their existence.

Any "truly" advanced and enlightened society would provide for the poor, the sick and the handicapped, while spending significant sums on research for cures and for helping those who need help. Greed and selfishness would be discouraged, as would paying people a lot of money just because they occupy a particular position. Legal entities (corporations or businesses) would be required to meet the goals they set for their place in society, and not be expected merely to make a profit.

Those who teach and those who care for children, the poor, the sick and the handicapped would be paid what they are worth to society for doing that work, and people who merely make money for others would be paid the least.

There would be civilized ways to resolve disputes: mediation, arbitration, cooperation.

Laws and other social rules would not protect the rich at the expense of the poor. Tax revenue would reallocate money on a monthly or weekly basis, not just once a year.

You would not be able to be President if you could not speak your own language well. There would be no need for generals, but if there were any, they would not be allowed to copy the President's bad language and even make their own language use so loose that it made no sense ("Cashay" for cache, for example).

No one would be allowed to have a high school diploma, or any higher degree, without proving they in fat know enough to have such a degree or diploma. And no one without a diploma would be allowed to work except at the most menial physical labor.

If they managed to do away with money as the primary indicator of status. Also, if racism, sexism and classism became transparent in everyday life.
