The media made a big deal when a bi-racial woman won (Halie Berry), and now they are doing it again with a Spanish woman (Penelope Cruz), I am wondering if a Jewish woman ever won for best actress.

Babs tied with Katherine Hepburn in 1968 for best actress but never won the Oscar outright. However, I think Norma Shearer (Irving Thalberg's wife) was Jewish and she won the 3rd best actress Oscar in 1929/30 for 'The Divorcee'.

Also Anne Bancroft won in 1962 but she did not become Jewish until after 1964 when she married Mel Brooks (does that count?)

UPDATE: I have confirmed that Norma Shearer was Jewish when she won the best actress Oscar. She converted when she married Thalberg and that was prior to her work on 'The Divorcee'.

Halle Berry for Monster's Ball (2002) gained perfect actress oscar she is the purely one i'm able to imagine of. there is also Hattie McDaniel, who become the first African American woman to ever be nominated and actual win an Oscar yet she purely gained the perfect helping actress for lengthy gone with the Wind (1939).

In 1968 Barbra Streisand won the Best Actress award for her role in "Funny Girl" as Fanny Brice.

The question IS: has a Jewish woman ever been nominated! I am not a Penelope Cruz fan (though she was great in "Blow") so I am hoping Meryl Streep wins-again!

I think Natalie Portman got nominated once. Other than that, I don't believe so.
