I am trying to sew for the first time, but I'm having trouble finishing the neckline. Can someone explain how to apply a facing, or direct me to a good website for instructions?

Lay the facing pattern pieces on the fabric, paying attention to fold lines and grain lines, and cut out on the cutting lines. [Also cut interfacing. You can attach the interfacing to the facing or put it between facing and garment according to pattern instructions. I'll use brackets for the interfacing instructions.] Mark any dots from pattern pieces to the exact same place on the facing [and interfacing] fabric (precision is important here). To keep the facing from stretching while you work with it, stay stitch 1/2" from the neck edge, using your normal length machine stitch. Don't worry if the stay stitching isn't perfect because it will be hidden.

Sew the facing [and interfacing] pieces together at the shoulders and press open. Hem the outside edge of the facing by folding over the edge and machine stitching -- because of the curve, it may be easier to use a zigzag instead of straight stitch here.

OK, the facing is assembled and it's time to attach it to the neckline. Pin the facing [and interfacing] carefully to the outside of the garment, right sides together, matching shoulder seams, center front, center back, and any dots or notches that were indicated on the pattern pieces, with the interfacing on top. The layers are, interfacing, top; facing, wrong side up, middle; garment, right side up, bottom. Stitch carefully on the seam line, which is 5/8" from the edge. Your stay stitching is in the seam allowance and will not show. If pattern directions indicate, sew a second time very close to your first line of stitching. Using a sharp scissors, trim the facing close to the stitching. Clip the curves along the neck all the way to the stitches, but be careful not to clip any stitches.

Turn the facing and interfacing to the inside of the garment and press it flat. Good pressing at this point may be the difference between something that looks good and something that looks homemade. Hand sew the facing shoulder seam allowance to the garment seam allowance to keep it from shifting or bunching.
