Mahatma is a title. It means great soul. Atma is soul. Maha is Godly.

first of all....i tell u that we are not called here mohatma but it is mahatma.........in every nation...all fight for there freedom....all have there past like that....in india there is also story like that....but our freedom is different like others...because Gandhiji (mohandas ghandhi) has taken a freedom from violance....but in other nation freedom is very cruel in many ways.....and indian freedom is become violance and all creadited to Gandhiji and all indian people.....but.............Gandhiji had start opposing first and learn to oppose in that way and that way all people has to do and we got freedom from them so we called them MAHATMA....BECAUSE OF THAT.....THE MAHATMA name is given by....someone but i don't remember what is name of them.........

'Mahatma' means 'great' in an Indian language, Hindi...since he is known for his greatness for the country he fought for, thus the name
