First, try no password - just hit enter. Then try "admin", "Admin", "administrator", and "Administrator".
If this doesn't work, you might try the following before you reformat the disk.

If you have the original operating system disk and a product key that hasn't been used by someone else do a clean install of the OS. It should format before loading.
Good luck.

If you don't know the admin password, you have few choices. You may wish to reformat the HD, re-install Win XP, and your applications. If you have a restore disk, you can use that to make the laptop like it was brand new.
How about trying to contact the previous owner and asking him/her?

You can get into a passworded system by doing the following;
1. Boot the system using safemode.
2. Go into control panel.
3. Go into user accounts.
4. Pick a user who is an administrator and click on their icon.
5. Click on remove password.
6. Reboot the system in normal mode.
7. Click on the icon of the user who you removed the password.

If you reformat and reinstall Windows you'll be able to set up all the passwords and stuff from scratch again so that'll certainly solve your problem. Although doing so will wipe everything that's already on there so it's not ideal if there's anything you want to keep from the current Windows install.

There are ways to reset it using a bootable linux disc or something similar. It would require you to be at least a little familiar with DOS like commands however. Try searching to download a linux clone like Knoppix. Otherwise yes, formatting the HD would work.

Have you created a password for it yet?
If not go into Control Panel...User Accounts....and go from there, otherwise get a copy of ERD Commander to crack into your system and change the admin password.
