Could it be there's no proof of their existence? Or maybe the lack of empirical evidence scares them away? Who knows, some people are just rational i guess....

Several reasons. Some claim to have seen them. Some feel that since there is a God, that ghosts must also be real. Some are just very supersticious whether from their upbringing, culture, or not being educated.
The fact is, there is no proven evidence of ghosts or spirits, so the belief is not based on a truth.
That there is a God or a creator is a belief of some of the greatest minds to have ever lived (einstein, for one) but this does not make it acceptable to believe in ghosts.
And, it doesn't mean that there is not a soul or spirit that continues on when someone dies- but do we see them or hear them- no. only in our hearts.

Well that is a toss up some do, and some don't. I for one believe that they do not exist cause people do not have that much power to return from the grave, if it was so we would'nt go in the first place (to the grave). There would be more statistics and more evidence because almost everyone would come back. Why is there only a select few people"ghosts" who come back, come on!

I don't know. Until I actually encounter one I have to say that ghosts are not real.
Paranormal stuff is fascinating, though! I would like to meet a ghost, preferably a good looking Confederate soldier.

I believe in ghosts or earth bound spirits, I think that certain people are more sensitive to the paranormal side of life.

Incomplete knowledge. Most people are either taught that the soul does not exist outside of a body, or they are taught that when the soul leaves the body, it has a certain destination. Neither of these explanations are complete, because they do not take into consideration that the soul has a will to act.

I think a more appropriate question would be "Why DO people believe in ghosts?"

I don't believe in anything that's supernatural (ie, god, unicorns, ghosts, souls, etc). I try to base my beliefs on logic, rational thought -- which basically means I can't believe in things that exist outside of reality.

Because there are so few of them around. But there are spirits that bother some people. The confusion is weather they are dead people IN the spirit, or demons who are spirit. So its easier to say, there is no such thing. A form of denial.
