Not everyone in Rent had AIDS, such as the filmmaker, Mark.
Roger evidently got AIDS from his former girlfriend, who evidently got it from her smack addiction (sharing needles maybe?).
Mimi probably got it the same way, sharing dirty needles feeding her addiction.
Angel and Tom? Hard to say. Both characters were homosexual men, so I suppose it is inferred that it was transmitted that way.
Neither Maureen or Joanne had any evidence of the virus.

only Collins, Angel, Roger, and Mimi were the ones with AIDS; Mark, Joanne, Maureen, and Benny never had it
FYI--I'm not sure how these people got the disease....either from drugs or sexual intercourse with people of the same sex (AKA homosexuals)

Angel probably got it from sex.
I don't know how Collins got it.
Mark doesn't have it and I'm pretty sure Maureen, Joann and Benny don't have it either.

It's been a long time since I have seen it, as it hasn't come back to CO in a long time. But if I remember correctly it stemmed from unprotected sex and drug use.

Roger got it from his girlfriend, Allison, who then killed herself.
They didn't explain how Mimi, Angel, and Tom Collins got it. I imagine through sex.
