Firstly, they are the gnostic gospels. These gospels were alledgedly written by some of the other disciples and one is alledgedly attributed to Mary Magdalane. These gospels were felt to be too "radical" or did not show what they thought the true face of Jesus. The first conclave (the first ecumenical counsil) decreed that these gospels wre heresy and made it illegle to have them. The fragments that we have of the Gnostic (sometimes spedded Knostic) gospels were secredted away in large earthen jars until they were uncovered in the middle of the 20th century. They are still controversal today.

If you search for "gnostic", you will find everything you need.

From "Gnosis", "knowledge"
The idea that Jesus passed "secret" knowledge to his disciples, or only to certain of his disciples, is very much in accord with the thinking of Gnostic groups. There are just enough references which fit this idea in the orthodox gospels to account for the appearance of such texts as "The secret Gospel of Mark"

The Gnostics were around 150 years after the death of Christ. There for they were not deemed to hold enough proof to merit there induction into the Holy Bible. The books really had no effect not because they were too radical it was because they really didn't contain useful information.
