Students who wish to become filmmakers (including directors) usually major in film.
Elite liberal arts colleges often have excellent film departments, but the best universities for film are usually considered to be UCLA, USC, and NYU.
The major decision to be made is whether to study in a department of film studies, or whether to study in a department of film production/cinematography. The former is usually more academic, including the history of film and film criticism, and the latter is usually more hands-on/vocational.
I will mention, however, that I know many people who studied in departments of film studies and went on to very successful careers in filmmaking, including directing.
To create a listing of all programs in these majors, go to
http://www.collegeboard.com and click "College Matchmaker." Fill out as much as you can of the questionnaire, being sure to select under "Majors" both (or either) Film Studies and Film Production/Cinematography. The search engine will then create a list of all programs that might be of interest to you.
