It's getting too hot your Punto got some problems with the engine cooling system. This is because some Puntos have the temperature gauge in electronic format and so you will not have any needles in the gauge and when it will be getting hot the red light will turn on. So take it to a qualified person to check your girlfriend's car. Please be careful when the change in the coolant is being made. Remember that the coolant has to be well bleeded and the Punto has two bleeders - one is on the side of the radiator and another one is above the manifold. When filling up with the coolant you have to unscrew a bit these bleeders so that air will come out. Continue filling until you see the coolant coming out from these 2 bleeders and when they do so, you can tighten them up. The bleeder that is situated in the radiator has to be un/tightened by your fingers only and not with a screwdriver cause it's made out of nylon to prevent rust and corrosion. The other bleeder can be un/tightened by your fingers or by a screwdriver.
I'm saying that the light is of the temperature because the warning light of the fuel gauge is situated beneath the fuel gauge.
Hope this helps my friend.

Red lights tend to mean something important is wrong. Could be either coolant temperature/level (critical), or airbag not working (not serious unless you crash) I'd take it to a Fiat garage, at least to find out what it is.
