The big bulky guy with dark hair and full beard went by two names, Bluto, and Brutus. IIRC, the former was used in the original Popeye newspaper strips and the latter in the animated films. (And, in comic-book advertisements for the short-lived Popeye video game, Popeye referred to him as “Brutusk”, though that could have been a printer’s error )
His original rival for Olive’s affections was her previous boyfriend Ham Gravy.
The first guy he fought in his first appearance was Jack Snork. Snork shot Popeye fifteen times in the chest at point blank range when Olive Oyl and her brother Castor broke the bank at the casinos on Dice Island. The only reason Popeye was there was that they needed to sail to Dice Island so Castor hired some out-of-work dock rat to run their ship.
Popeye survived by rubbing the head of Bernice, the magic Whiffle Hen. Castor had done the same thing to be lucky enough to clean out the casino. So, Castor got gambling luck from her magic, and Popeye got fighting luck; i.e., nothing can kill him. He once survived falling out of an airplane from thousands of feet, because he landed on his chin. This was LONG before they introduced spinach, as a gag. But then the Texas spinach farmers built a statue to Popeye, and the spinach became immortalized in the animated cartoons, and entrenched in people’s perceptions of Popeye.
There is no truth to the rumor that Popeye has a twin brother, Cockeye, who is a Marine.
