Go to MSconfig under Start --> Run. Follow the tabs to Services and Startup. I reccomend to DISABLE ALL ITEMS UNDER STARTUP. Then reboot your system and do a scan. Otherwise, slave the drive up to another machine and scan it as a slave.

Don't install just ANY anti spayware. That will not help the cause.
Use "zonealarm security suite" it is a complete solution. I'm not guessing but using it since 1-2 year.
Norton tend to make system slow as it is more resource hungry.
