Tool is very good if you consider them nu-metal. System of a Down is OK. As far as that genre goes, that's it. Punk? There are some great classic punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and classic(70's) Misfits. Avoid anything new. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are both very good grunge bands. Check out a band called the Melvins. They where very influential to the grunge style.

After you get done with all that run out and buy Slayer's Reign In Blood. It doesn't get any better. When you want to know about Real Metal not nu-metal ask again.

Try listening to some old Pantera or Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Corrosion of Conformity, The Melvins or perhaps something on the heavier side like Hatebreed, Earthcrisis, V.O.D. Mad Ball, Glass Jaw, Nothingface, Gruntruk (if you can find it) Black Label Society, Gangster Bit*h Barbie, Sevendust, Nashville P*ssy, or try some old school punk like Black Flag or Bad Religion. There is soooooo much out there just creep around on Itunes and explore the options

Starting old, grungy stuff like Dinosaur Junior may appeal, coming a bit later, maybe Soundgarden or Alice in Chains, for nu-metal stuff, early Korn is stunning, Linkin Park have their moments. You could always just go the easy route and listen to Nirvana!
