This will require me to learn a new system which is in high demand at other firms as well. I want to ask my boss if I can learn this system and takeover a project instead of having the company outsource it to someone who so far has not been very reliable or efficent. The thing is that I also want to ask for more money. This is additional work that I will be taking on top of my regular responsibilites. How do I ask my employer about this particularly the money situation? How much of an increase can I ask for. I did some online research and found that going rate for someon proficient with this experience can earn 25 to 30 % more then I currently am.

Learn something about the new system first.

Tell the employer - YOU enjoy a challenge, and would love the opportunity to try to help the corporation/business with this new work.

You should let definitely let your boss know that you want to learn this new system - but do not ask for more money now. If your company is thinking about outsourcing then they are looking for ways to cut costs. Also think of the free training as a raise (since this is an investment in YOU). When the time for your annual review comes, then you will have some ammo to ask for a raise. If you are working for a reputable company (sounds like you are) then they will recognize the effort and reward you accordingly. If not, then you will be PROFICIENT in a new system that increases your marketability!

Best wishes!

Do not ask for money first. First ask for the opportunity to learn the system and once you do that, take on a project. Once you prove yourself, schedule a metting with your supervisor and explain your added value to teh company and ask for a raise.
