"Red Mars" is a book by Kim Stanley Robinson.
There is also a "Blue Mars" and a "Green Mars" by
the same author.

It is a reference to the color of Mars (currently).
The color is due to, amongst other things, the
high amount of iron oxide in the surface soil.

iron oxide is the same thing as rust. That is, as iron
is exposed to the elements on Earth, it combines with
oxygen, turns reddish and is known as rust.

If NOTHING else, the oxide in the surface of the
planet is a potential source of oxygen for human
exploration.
