You can't get shred-type speed until you develop the "muscle memory" in your fretting hand. Also, you need to completely develop your accuracy.

You need to practice exercises......if you don't know scales already, look some up on the internet, and practice those over and over.....you will build up your accuracy and at the same time your fretting hand will be learning those scales.....and they will become automatic. I recommend starting with the 5 positions of the major pentatonic scale. What's great is that you can play them in any key.....the positions don't change up or down the neck. Slowly you will start to build up speed (and become more accurate) and you will be able to burn through the scales more quickly......you can't "shred" through scales if you have to think about what notes to play.....so these scales have to become second nature to you. Also, someone mentioned sweep picking....I COMPLETELY agree with that......sweep picking will make shredding much easier. It might be a bit awkward to learn at first, but keep on it....once you find that balance of speed between your sweep picking and your fretting fingers, it gets easier.

practice practice and alot of practice, depending on ur skill level u might want to buy a book on it. Also an easy way to play fast is fingertapping. all you have to do is tap the frets. Although, if u r trying to play someting fast without finger taping practice playing each string consequtively. First play each string once going down then up. Then do the same thing except pluck each string twice, and so on. Enough practice and applying that to actual playing and you'll be ripping it up like the pros
