While many of you mention the romans as the greatest army in history you don't really give the reasons in a valid point. The army was never as large as 150,000 soldiers as many sources especially Plutarch and Livy state figures of around 50 thousand at the most. What made the romans such a big force in the mediterranean and in later years of the roman empire was not their strategic excellence or the sheer size of their army in later years but it was their aggression and ability to gain strength and power from their defeats, especially during the attacks by King Pyrrhus of Macedon. Many of you claim the startegic brilliance of the generals but with the roman army the army was controlled by the consuls of which a new one was elected every 2 years and so much of their canpaigning was done under a new commander every 2 years, this can only be looked at in a way as to look at the army in having more of a role in the victories than the general.

Hope this helps

I would agree with another users reply to this posting when talking about the Spartans, although you are asking about the greatest Army. I believe the greatest soldiers in history are the Spartans.
A Spartan youngster started training to be a soldier at the age of 7. They were not allowed to cry or or show weakness in any form. Although on a small scale they didn't have armies the size of Rome or Alexander, I believe without doubt these are the greatest soldiers of history probably without equal on a one to one basis.

The Greek Army. The warriors at that time had new armor that bows could not penetrate through. They also developed biological warfare, using scorpion bombs or poison from insects and even hot sand. They had great military and weaponry advancements for their time, and should be recognized for it. However, the Roman Army was the better when it comes to strength and power. They were more organized and divided their army into 5 classes, rich or nobles in the first and most heavily armed. Their organization on the battle field was uncanning - they had one group in the front, and when they were ready to retire, the next group would come forward while the previous group stepped back. This was repeated until the last group.

In the sense of 'never defeated'? Interesting. Certainly not in that case the British, nor the Ottomans, Romans or even Alexanders. Although to be fair, if we talk about an Army we should be talking about an Army at a particular period - the Brits and the Romans (and the Ottomans) were around so long that they obviously had their good and bad centuries. And then you have to ask whether you mean the biggest (Chinese), most powerful (Soviet or US), bravest (probably the Greeks) or highest achieving (probably Alexander's, but also Cortes). But you'd also have to consider the Islamic expansion up to the Battle of Tours, and the incredible geographic dominance of the Mongols.

The Spartans
Look at the battle of Thermopylae. 300 Spartans, with some Greek allies held at bay an army of at least 200,000 Persians led by King Xerxes.
King Leonardis blocked the only road through which the Persian army could pass and held this massive army at bay, until they where betrayed by a Greek who showed the Persian army a track through the mountains to get behind them.
The Spartans volunteered to hold the Persians at the pass, allowing the rest of the Greek army to escape to later defeat Xerxes.
Its estimated that the 300 Spartans killed as many as 80,000 Persians before finally being overrun.
