I've been working at this company for a little over a year now. The first 6 months were really busy. Now the last 6 months have been dead slow. I keep asking my manager for work and he says there's nothing. I ask him what's going on, where's the work and he makes up excuses then says it's going to get really busy just wait and see. Well, I've been waiting 6 months and I see nothing happening. Should I just sit around getting paid for doing nothing or let my boss know I can't handle the idleness?

i was working for such a company, it was for 5 months almost, the boss would always get me involved in research bla bla just to get me busy. other ppl were enjoying it (the 'idleness') but I couldn't take it so i quit ... two months later they fired two thirds of the staff, a couple of months later they close the company and ran away ...

Be aware ... do whats good for you

i work in the construction industry... you want to talk about down time... durring the fall and winter seasons it always gets slow because of the weather but i know once the weather improves there will be more work. My advice to you is enjoy the break while you can. get everything you need to do done early and sit there being paid without complaint. if you've asked your boss for something to do and they tell you there is nothing they can't fault you for doing nothing.

The business probably runs in a 6 month cycle...busy for 6 months & then quiet for 6. You probably need to be busy on a continuous basis, so maybe you need to be shopping for different employment.

All I can suggest is apply for another job with consistent activity, but make sure you keep your current employ in case job applications are slow forthcoming. Just a thought.
