They do teach long division in schools, generally however, it is taught in Elementary school, around 3rd or 4th grade. After you learn the basics, you go on to harder stuff, where it is easier to use a calculator to solve problems. I did use my long division last year in Algebra 2, where we did long division with algebraic problems, but don't ask me to do it now, I have completely forgotten.

Depends what u mean by long division. In the UK you would be expected to divide a three digit number by a two digit number without a calculator. At key stage 3 this corresponds to level 5 and the same applies to long multiplication. Corresponding gcse grade is E standard. Estimating the answers, rather than working them out exactly, is rated a higher order skill.

According to my 8 year old daughter, they are only taught short division now. I'm not surprised, like you, I couldn't do a long division sum now to save anybody's life!

Yes, well at least 5 years ago it was. It was used in my school as an alternative for students who couldnt divide long numbers and decimals.
I think that long multiplication is a godsend, I still use it now. I was always a late learner in maths because i never felt that anything was explained to me properly!

My son is in 5th grade this year and last year they started long division and still work long division this year. We live in Texas, I guess most schools are the same.

I believe it is, they put us through it anyway, despite the invention of the calculator rendering it utterly useless. they now even go so far as teaching long division of algebra which really hurts.
lets just hope no one threatens to murder our fathers unless we can divide 11567 by 6572 without touching a calculator.

yes we have always been taught all the different methods for every possible sum - they have to leave you to choose the one that is best for you now. Except you can't choose calculators because you always have to do 2 exams, one with and one without a calculator.

Hi, I was only at school about 2 years ago, and we had to do it for our GCSE's, we had a calculator and a non caluculator test and we had to do it with both.
