My hubby is Jon Doe II. I said screw that. I named my son Nicholas. He has the same middle name as hubby's first. I told him we were not royalty and I was not doing that to me son. I would say, if you must, make his name Jon Doe Jr. again. But, come on now, give him his own. Good luck

Yeah, I don't understand why your boyfriend has a Jr. and II - it should just be II, but whatever. You are correct in that it would be John Doe the Third (John Doe III). I don't know what there is to fight about - the way I see it there isn't any other possiblities because John Doe Jr III just isn't right.

I think traditionally your bf should have been the third, making yours IV, but since technically your bf is the second to his dad's Jr, then your son would be John Doe Jr. III.
Just a bit of advice since you're not married--it may not be the best idea to give the baby the bf last name (unless you are really engaged with a ring and a date) because if/when you break up you will probably be the custodial parent and it will be much easier if you and your child share the same last name (school, doc appt, picking up prescriptions, etc).

Yes it would be John Doe the third (lll) I don't really understand it either but that is the way it is. You don't put a Jr on anyone but the original Jr (your bf's dad)

You poor thing. He probably doesnt like the idea that he was named wrong though. The dilemma: make him feel better and name this one Jr. III, or break his heart but name the next one right. Good Luck! Thats a decision to make on your own.

I think it's cute. My uncle is the 3rd and his son is the 4th. My cousin had three girls. He was not going for a 5th.
See if there is a compromise
like John (your dad's name)
or (your dad's name) John
Good luck
Congratulation
