Do people really have no time to spell their questions and their answers correctly? Or have they been sent through the school system without anybody bothering to check their spelling?

Have we let SMSs dictate how we spell or do we depend on the spell checks in our computers? Do parents have no time to check their children's homework or were they not taught properly in thier turn?

Do we take no pride in how we communicate? Our answers change other people's lives be it by resolving a doubt, teaching them something they didn't know, by bringing a smile to their faces or a fond memory to their minds.

And yes, I managed to spell at least one word wrong in my question. Can you spot it? It was unintentional, so shame on me too :D

I remember my english teachers fondly (now, now that I don't have to hand homework in to them. They tried hard and we tried them too. It must be so frustrating and so rewarding at the same time.

:D I must say, we're all typing our answers with our best spelling excepting the answers that quote my typographical error. They're correctly spotting my "thier" there.

Yes, teachers try their utmost to teach spelling using the age old 'learn the spelling rule' method to enable growth. They also try to motivate the students to edit their work using dictionaries. I'm sure you know the Chinese Proverb: ‘Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.’

There are some children who will never improve simply because they, unfortunately don't want to until it's too late. Sad but true.

Of course not!!! Even in my science exams there is a marking section for quality of written communication, which is for good use of language, punctuation and spelling.
In all English exams you are marked on spelling. Just because as we work our way up school we aren't given spelling tests like little children doesn't mean that we aren't taught spelling. You are expected to be old enough to look a word up in the dictionary, and if you still spell something wrong the teacher underlines it.

Some people are good at spelling and some aren't. Some forget it all as soon as they leave school, and some just have mind blocks on random words.

Don't stereotype the whole of the school system and it's students!

Yes, the emphasis on spelling is gone. We are told children can use spell check. Trouble is, if you do not know the correct form of a word, spell check is useless. Parents are especially prone to saying their little darlings should be taught more important things. It grows even more challenging when the people in charge of schools have few skills in spelling themselves. It seems so many people take pride in not being able to spell, and especially in spelling in the way they speak amongst friends. Sad, isn't it? I have a different vocabulary in different circumstances, which I think we all should and do. I can, however, present myself well in proper English. As a teacher, I hope I can, anyway. (Dear Lord. Now I'm scared to death I misspelled something. LOL)

does it really matter as long as people understand each other. The only reason spelling is there is to be used as a form of communication. So what if it's wrong why should people be condemmed because of that. And don't you think this is a little out of line to be questioning everyone on here who make a spelling mistakes. What about people with dyslexia who cannot spell correctly on here. what about the parents with dyslexia who cannot check there childrens homework. Who cares if some words are spelt wrong, what harm is it doing.

Obviously kids these days take no pride in THEIR communication, hence all the eubonics that can be heard as you walk down the street. I can't even understand half of the questions on this site for that very same reason. Half of the problem is spelling but I think that the grammar problem in this country has become a bigger problem.

Schools still teach students how to spell correctly. It's just that some people write how they like. Then when some people get onto the computer they just type things in abbreviations to make it easier.

Students only pay attention to spelling in class (if then, and only as much as anything else in school).

Then again, language is always changing, including spelling, for better or worse.
