Like some of the others have said, join the Telephone Preference Service to stop sales people contacting you by phone. However, joining the TPS will not stop maket researchers contacting you - there's nothing you can do to stop legitimate market research calls.
If you don't want to sign up to the TPS, just tell the person on the other end of the phone that you rent your home, and I promise you 99% of the time they won't bother you again!
But, please don't be rude to them! These are just people trying to do their jobs.

learn some words of a foreign places language, fairly some thing no longer susceptible to be understood by ability of a chilly caller. Arabic, between the jap eu languages, jap or artwork properly. Use a raised voice, and gesticulate, no longer purely do they opt to pass away, they could positioned you down as an "impossible" for the destiny. whilst chilly calling as quickly as interior the previous, i became greeted on the door by ability of small, scruffy, stocky gents, with a baseball bat in one hand, and the leash to a Rottweiler in the different. I quickly forgot why i became there, till long rapid steps interior the direction of his backyard gate.

You can join the telephone preferencing service. That would cut down on the amount you receive. If the odd one gets through simply say you are on the telephone prefering list and hang up. They have to stop calling you. As to door cold callers, simply say no thank you (politely) and then ask them to leave.
Here is the link for the telphone preference service http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ . You can also join lists for emails and junk mail on simpliar sites. If you are interested I'll send you the links

First, put your phone number on the do not call list. I did and my phone suddenly stopped ringing.
Second, hang up while YOU are talking. That sounds like a dropped call and not your rude self (who would ever hang up on themselves?)
My favorites are the survey takers. I always ask how much they'll pay me for my opinion. That usually stops them.
Door-to-door people are harder, but you either have a backbone or you're a door mat. Don't worry about their feelings. After a few turn-downs, they no longer have any feelings!

Cold callers by phone I just love, I just put the phone down but leave it off the hook. These guys love to talk, and I don't want to listen, but hey, it's their phone bill.
Cold callers to the door the dog takes care of.

Also, there is a Do Not Call registry you can sign up for so that it is illegal to call your house. Look for it online. You have to renew it every six months, I think, because they update the list periodically. Once you're on it, only businesses with whom you already do business are allowed to call you.
And I've had friends in telemarketing and they're not allowed to let you go without hearing "no" three times. So say it three times, politely, and they'll give up. If not, it's OK to say, "Sorry, not interested. Thanks." and hang up.
As for the door, don't even open your door unless you know who it is. Once they say they're selling something, it's easy to say "No, thanks" to a door and walk away.

to stop unwanted telephone calls, ive invested in an answering machine. to stop cold callers at the door, ive been down to the dog pound and bought a huge brute of a dog, which i call "bast***" and anyone comes into my yard enters at his/her own risk. i just call out the dogs name, sit back and watch the intruder fly past like an express train. dont forget to put a sign up warning dudes of the dog.

I hate it when they ring you and then hang up cos they dial lots at once and speak to the first who answers. What i do then is next time they call (you need caller i.d) answer and dont speak then they are saying hello for ages wasting their time. My partner says " i ll just get her" and doesnt get me, therefore they are waiting ages. He goes back periodically to say "she is on her way" till they hang up, having had wasted time. And time is money to them so mess em about a bit.
