I have a virus on my computer and I know it is my fault. I tried to download something I shouldn't have and it had me format it into the system32 file--STUPID, I KNOW!! Anyhow, It is attached to that file and it has ruined my entire laptop!

Anyhow, I tried to just reinstall windows (and the disk drives) but it warns it saves all your material when it reinstalls- so after I did all that- I see that the virus is STILL there.

I am starting to think the only way to get rid of it, is to completely remove windows from my computer and clean the hard drive and reinstall.

I don't know how to do that. Can someone help me to do that? Or at least tell me what else can be done (besides another freaking virus scan)??

Maybe I should delete those folders/files (in the system 32 folder) and then do the reinstall of windows??? I am at a loss now... HELP! please!

If you know the name of the virus, you can usually go to one of the big anti-virus company websites, type in the name of the virus in their 'search' box, and come up with a specific set of removal instructions. Since you have not provided the name of the virus, I can't give you a direct link to the removal instructions.

Oftentimes with a virus file that has attached itself to an important system file, the file cannot be changed while Windows is running. You might be able to boot Windows into "Safe Mode" (when you turn on the computer, tap the [F8] key until a set of boot options comes up, then choose 'Safe Mode'). This loads Windows with a minimal set of drivers. Then try running a full scan with your anti-virus program and see if it can repair the damaged file. Be prepared for a full scan in safe mode to take a few hours.

i know you don't want to hear about another virus scan. However have to tried to run a online scan? They virus may have hidden itself from your on board virus program.

You can run a free online scan from CA.

If that scan does not find it try HijackThis.

Download HijackThis---http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis. Run and Save a Log. When you log comes up copy and paste the entire log at http://www.hijackthis.de/ . Analyze your results. You will then get a screen that will tell you if you have any nasty stuff in your computer. Follow instructions to deal with any nasties. CAUTION: This is a very powerful tool. Be careful.

You can reformat your hard drive using the disk that came with your computer. That will make it just as it was when you got it.
