Read the Declaration of Independence. The answer is there.

The short version is this: Most governments were ruled by a King whose authority supposedly came from God. The Founders were enlightened fellows who realized that all humans are equal under God. Therefore, authority shall flow from God to The People who can then pick public servants to handle the administrative tasks of their country. Government officials are LOWER in authority than the common citizen.

The Founders also understood it is the nature of many people to try to reverse that relationship and make government servants into the Masters. That is why the Bill of Rights was written. It is a set of laws restricting Government servants from doing the things that such people do when they try to seize power, such as suppressing free political speech or taking weapons away from the general population.

Now, with increasing Socialist influence, our nation is once again turning into a top-down system of rule. Government ignores the Bill of Rights, restricts free political speech and restricts Citizen access to combat firearms. These are signs of real danger, as the Founding Fathers warned us, that we are losing our Sovereignty and our government is turning back into the system that our Founders fought against.

They didn't want one branch of the government to be more powerful than the other two. You can't have a dictatorship if you have a Legislative branch that can overrule it. Same with the judicial branch. If the Supreme Court says that Congress and the President made a law that violated the Constiution, then they are checking the other two. The President can veto or reject legilslation that Congress sends to him. He is then checking them.
