I think you are referring to James Arness in 'Gunsmoke'. Although he was in 'THEM!' and 'The Thing' neither of those were his first film appearances. He was in 'The Farmer's Daughter' in 1947.

"The Thing" James Arnes played the monster, then he played Matt Dylon on Gunsmoke for a long, long, long, run on TV.
