You are absolutely right, he is an English writer.
He wrote many well known plays, such as "Romeo and Juliet", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "King Lear", "The Tempest", "Othello", "The Merchant of Venice". Choose one and read it. At least some summerie written by Charles and Mary Lamb to get an idea.

William Shakespeare is a great Playwright (writer who writes plays) and actor and poet (one who writes poems). Shakespeare has wrote many great plays that are studied worldwide because of its beauty and its ability to tackle the human psychology of the Modern Man. Examples of his plays, which I have studied are: A Winter's Tale; A Midsummer's Night's Dream; Hamlet; Julius Ceasar and Macbeth. In addition, to this he had his own theatre "The Globe Theatre" in which he acted.
Anyway, you can always log on to www.sparknotes.com to see synopsis of his plays. I, also, studied something about his life which said that he was married to a very religious woman whom he didn't like and treated badly (Anne Hathaway) and whom he gave his second best bed. His two daughters were Judith and Susanna. Susanna was the most popular and she was close to her father. I know that he left to London for a long time to gain fame and money.
good luck

Well, he *ISNT* anyone anymore.. He *WAS* a playwright, poet, etc. Some argue that he is the best of the best, while others say he didn't write half the things attributed to him.
Rememeber, you do not have to read his works slow and 'proper.' People spoke as quickly as we do now, so read it like you are reading anything else....
