I just (literally one hour ago) went through this with a laptop and a projector. First, your laptop has to support it. If it does there will be a monitor port on the back into which your desktop monitor can plug.
Second, after you've plugged in the monitor, right click on the desktop and select properties. Select the settings tab. Click on the box labeled 2 - this is your second monitor. Adjust the properties to suit you and check the Extend my Windows Desktop Onto This Monitor box.
That should do it. If it doesn't, you've exceeded my area of expertise.
Good luck.

There should atually be a serial port on the laptop. The only problem is that you have to change the display setting configurations to make the laptop see the monitor. You cant just plug in a monitor and have it work. Your best bet is to get the screen repaired. It's not really that expensive.

Yes, you totally can do this and I've never heard of a laptop that doesn't have a VGA (monitor) port on the back for precisely this function. On most laptops, after you've connected it to the monitor, there's a key combination you need to hit to switch the laptop to output to the external port. There should be a monitor icon on one of the keys on the top row of your laptop keyboard, hold the Fn key and hit that monitor key to switch to the external monitor. There's a table of the exact key combination required for various makes and models of laptop here:

there should be a monitor plug in the back with 15 pins if it is a PC laptop... just plug monitor up and see if the port is live... if the laptop screen is still slightly readable... you might have to enable the desktop monitor in the control panel

If your laptop doesn't have a monitor port, you will have to buy the USB to Monitor cable.
